Arnold’s Top Tips for Healthy Aging

A host of celebrities are pushing 80 and redefining our ideas of what it means to get older. One of those is Arnold Schwarzenegger who turned 77 this year and remains active on TV in the series FUBAR, on social media, and through his podcast and newsletter.

What can we learn about aging and modifying our attitudes towards strength in our 7th and 8th decades from Arnold?  There are numerous articles on the web where he has been interviewed about this and we’ve summarized the takeaways for you here!

1. Prioritize Regular Exercise

Arnold has been lifting weights since before some of us were born but now he advocates a mix of aerobic workouts and resistance training. Studies he references indicate that even moderate exercise can significantly benefit skin health by enhancing collagen production and fighting inflammation. He suggests that workouts do not need to be intense; even 30 minutes of moderate effort can be effective. 

2. Adopt a Balanced Diet

Arnold’s diet is so healthy, it’s probably got its own superhero movie deal in the worksl.  He has adopted a mostly plant-based diet, incorporating whole foods; think spinach, eggs and a sprinkle of magic dust (okay, maybe not magic dust). He’s also a big fan of olive oil consuming a couple of tablespoons of olive oil daily, to support heart health, especially since his THREE open heart surgeries.

3. Get Adequate Rest

Schwarzenegger prioritizes sleep, knowing if you’re going to protect the world from aliens, you better be well rested! He aims for six to seven hours each night knowing that sufficient rest is crucial for both physical and mental performance, helping to rejuvenate the body and mind. 

4. Listen to Your Body

A good piece of advice he shares along with other aging fitness pros, is to adapt workout routines based on how one feels. He advises against pushing through pain or discomfort and instead recommends adjusting exercises to maintain a sustainable fitness regimen. This approach helps prevent injuries and promotes long-term adherence to an active lifestyle. 

5. Maintain a Positive Mindset

Arnold approaches aging with humor and acceptance. He openly discusses the challenges of watching his body change but emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive outlook on life. His mantra of “Be Useful,” which is also the title of his recent book, reflects his belief in contributing positively to society as one ages. 

6. Stay Engaged and Active

Schwarzenegger remains actively involved in various projects, including his “Pump Club” newsletter, where he shares fitness tips and motivational content. Staying engaged in interests and hobbies can provide purpose and fulfillment as one ages.
